How to calculate your net worth
Net worth = assets − debts, on the same date, counting only your share of anything shared.
- Choose a date. Use balances and outstanding debts from that day, rather than mixing different months.
- Record the current value of each asset. Use account balances, market values for investments, and a reasonable estimate of the current sale value for a home or car.
- Record what you still owe. For a mortgage, use the outstanding principal, not the monthly payment or the original house price.
- Apply your share to each row and subtract your debts from your assets. The calculator rounds each share to cents before adding the totals.
Example: a jointly owned home
This is a fictional example. You have €18,000 in bank accounts, €12,000 invested and a car worth €6,000. You have a 50% share of a €240,000 home and its €100,000 outstanding mortgage. You also owe €2,000 on a personal loan.
Your assets total €156,000: 18,000 + 12,000 + 6,000 + 120,000. Your debts total €52,000: 50,000 + 2,000. Your net worth is €104,000. Load these figures into the calculator to try different values.
Your share of a debt may differ from your share of the property. This allocation organises your personal records; it does not change your contractual obligations. If several accounts have different ownership shares, calculate your share of each first and enter the total at 100%.
What to include and what not to count twice
Include your home even if you do not intend to sell it, while remembering it is not cash available to pay expenses. You can include a pension account balance in investments, while distinguishing it from available cash. Do not count both its balance and its underlying investments.
If your portfolio value already includes broker cash, do not add it again under bank accounts. Future salary and an inheritance you have not received are not current balances. This snapshot does not calculate taxes, selling costs or investment returns.
What if the result is negative?
It means that, using the values you entered, your debts exceed your assets. It is not a calculator error. A positive result does not guarantee liquidity either: a home may account for almost the entire total.
To compare months, keep the same valuation approach and the same set of accounts. Adding an account you already owned improves your inventory, but does not mean you earned that money.
Learn to interpret monthly changesHow do I find my net worth with Spain's tax agency?
The tax agency (Hacienda) doesn't calculate your net worth. Only people who must file Spain's wealth tax declare it, and the Agencia Tributaria's tax data shows some assets and accounts, not their market value or all your debts. To know your real figure, work it out yourself.
Method and sources
The calculation is assets minus debts. It is an indicative personal record, not a tax return or an investment recommendation. The example figures and the handling of ownership percentages are specific to this resource.
