Mean or median: which to look at

Picture ten neighbours: nine have €100,000 and one has €5 million. The mean comes out at €590,000, even though nobody has that figure; the median stays at €100,000. Net worth works the same way: the Spanish mean is almost double the median because a few households have a lot.

To know whether you're on track, compare yourself with the median for your age. And above all, with yourself a year ago: your progress says more than your position.

What the survey counts and what it doesn't

  • It measures households, not people. A couple with €200,000 between them is one household with €200,000.
  • It includes the home, other property, businesses, jewellery and art, and financial assets, minus all debts.
  • It doesn't include cars or other vehicles. If you count them in your figure, subtract them to compare.
  • The data is from the end of 2024. The Banco de España repeats the survey every two or three years and oversamples wealthy households to measure the top end properly.
  • The percentile we show is approximate: it comes from interpolating between the medians of each band and the overall median, not from the microdata.

Source and method

All figures come from the Banco de España, “Encuesta Financiera de las Familias (EFF) 2024: métodos, resultados y cambios desde 2022” (Survey of Household Finances 2024: methods, results and changes since 2022), Occasional Paper 2610, table 1.B and section 4.1. Frequently asked questions

What is the average net worth of a household in Spain?

According to the Banco de España's Survey of Household Finances (EFF) 2024, the mean net wealth of households is €344,700 and the median is €160,800. The median is more representative: half of households have less and the other half more.

What is the median net worth of a 30-year-old?

In households whose head is under 35, the median is €22,900 and the mean €90,100. It is the group with the least wealth, mainly because most don't own their home yet.

At what age do people have the most wealth in Spain?

Between 65 and 74, with a median of €249,200. That's a little later than the age of highest income: people keep saving and the mortgage is already paid off.

Why is the mean so much higher than the median?

Because a few very wealthy households push the mean up. The richest 10% have a median of €1,085,800 within their group. The median doesn't move with those extremes and describes the typical household better.

Does my home count towards net worth?

Yes. The main home is families' most important asset: 41.7% of the value of all their assets. That's why homeowner households have a median of €239,300 and those who don't own, €6,400.
