How it’s calculated
Value = grams × fineness ÷ 1,000 × price per gram of pure metal
Fineness tells you how many thousandths of the piece are pure metal: 18-carat gold is 750 thousandths, 24-carat almost a thousand. A 10 g chain of 18-carat gold contains 7.5 g of fine gold, and that's where its value lies.
Bullion coins already state how much fine metal they contain: a one-ounce Krugerrand or Philharmonic contains one troy ounce, 31.1035 g, even though it weighs a little more because of the alloy.
What you'll be paid isn't what it's worth
The price on this page is the metal's market price. Whoever buys a piece of jewellery from you has to melt it down, refine it and make something on it, so they'll offer you less; with well-known bullion coins the gap is usually smaller. Before you sell, ask them to tell you the weight and fineness they've measured, and compare several offers.
A piece of jewellery can be worth more than its gold because of its design, its maker or its stones. This calculator only measures the metal.
